this is what happens when hubby stumbles across a new Iphone app. One of my favorite things about my hubby is his sense of adventure and willingness to go/try/explore. I am a planner and like to do things that are often not the norm, not the everyday, and I love that he comes up with adventurous ideas for us too (especially when we can do them as a family).
**for those of you that have done this before, excuse the enthusiasm in this post, BUT I am hooked**
SO, Geocaching app downloaded and tonight we decided to go on our first "treasure hunt" as I described it to our very superhero vs. bad guy minded 4 year-old. He was ready for his mission to find the treasure suited up in his Batman jammies and flip-flops, I was ready for a family walk at sunset, hubby was on a mission to conquer quest #1 and Piper? Well, she was ready to hit the road in style!
We started down our street with building anticipation...would we find the hidden treasure? what would it be? Ok, maybe I am being a little dramatic, although I am pretty sure my 4 year-old's mind was going 1,000 mph. Along the path we walk so often towards our neighborhood park, we took notice of the same things we always point out...

We finally arrived at our destination and hubby pulled out the handy dandy App.
With the GPS on the phone, hubby and blake started to try to match their footsteps with the GPS location of the "treasure". It turned out, our first guess as to the hidden location was right, BUT it took a while to actually see it.

| Ok, regrouping where could it be?!! |
JACKPOT!

I spy a yellow playdough canister wrapped in camo paper with all kinds of junky goodies inside!!!
Like a kid who just found the dollar the Tooth Fairy left, I ran to the B's and quickly asked them to sit and look through the contents with me! Inside?
This "geocaching.com" Game piece list with names and dates from the past geocachers (?word?). The last one? From just 6 days ago!! Regretfully, we didn't have a pen :( So, we will be going to add our names shortly and now we know to go hunting with ink in hand! These missions need to be logged!
2 silly bandz, a sticker, an eraser, and a piece of a business card were the other contents! Blake was THRILLED! So, I guess geocache etiquette is to take a small something and leave a small something, so we came prepared!
We left a car sticker and went on our happy way...
MISSION COMPLETE!
And, hubby and I vowed to only geocache together (were dorks) and we already have plans to do it in all kinds of places! I love the idea of it! How cool to leave hidden trinkets for random people to go discover!
I feel like a nerd with a new rock collection and I can't wait to add to my pile.

So cute and I bet Blake LOVED it!!! Kind of sounds like you guys loved it more though ;)
ReplyDeleteWe did this LOTs of times with our kids when they were younger. The most amazing part is that I had no idea these things were out there before (how could I miss so many tupperware/rubbermaid containers in the "wilderness?") We would also try to geocache in vacation spots (we did ones in Hawaii, Florida and California also. It's a great way to spend time together and feel connected to something much bigger than you. Have fun with it!
