Can you even believe this sweet boy is a chatty Charles at school?
Believe it. Monday morning we were soaring high on the way to school! I had a great morning at the gym, favorite songs on the radio, a boy that hasn't once uttered "I don't wanna go to school" after the first 9 days and it was MONDAY FOLDER DAY!!
Woot Woot!
Everyday picking Blake up from school, we had talked about his day. I hear lots of cute/funny things. One day last week he briefly mentioned having to change his clip to yellow. We discussed why that means he isn't doing his best and he needs to stay on green from now on. He agreed.
Or so I thought.
Monday, I went to get Blake and as soon as the teacher opened the door and made eye contact with me..she signaled for me to stay after for a few minutes. DUN, DUN, DUN....
Once the other kids left, we went back into his classroom where Mrs. Callas had us both sit on the rug and she explained to me what the situation was. "I am seeing more of the back of his head than his eyes, I didn't want to say anything the first few days of school but now its time we do something, its getting worse and becoming a big distraction." She was quick to say (to me) "it really isn't a BIG deal, but its time we work on it". At one point, it looked like Blake was going to cry...he was holding back tears as hard as he could. Mrs. Callas couldn't have been more gentle and sweet, but firm. It was a GREAT way to approach our first speed bump.
We left and I was kinda frustrated and kinda worried..was this going to lead to more, bigger issues...is he going to be THAT kid in class? Blake and I talked about it, dad and Blake talked about it, even grandma mentioned why its important to listen and do your best. We needed a plan. The only thing I could think of was some kind of reward system. So, we made a sticker chart (well printed it from Pinterest). EASY. Mrs. Callas and I agreed on a thumbs up or thumbs down signal after school and for every thumbs up, Blake gets a sticker on his dinosaur chart...after 10, he chose going to Jumping Jordys as his reward. Done.
It's worked!
3/3 days so far! In fact, yesterday Blake told me that he was so quiet in the hallway going to the library that Mrs. Callas told him he was like an Army Solider...and that is the bees knees to my 5 year old!
Glad we had our first speed bump.
Glad we have a teacher who made it a learning process.
Glad we are improving!
Glad he is still loving school.
HOPING this is "learning Kindergarten" thing more than an issue that we have seen before with Blake starting to surface again. After emailing Mrs. Callas, it seems like *maybe* this talking is his way of trying to avoid writing activities...we have struggled with fine motor issues in the past. I have seen big strides at home, but it is SO hard to know what he is doing for others. As any other parent knows..that can be the difference of night and day.
Time will tell and if so, we will make another plan (Once I find out what that is).
In the meantime, I wonder: is talkativeness genetic (or even a word?).
